The Hawkeyes won 9 of the 10 bouts as predicted in front of an announced crowd
of 9,623. Here is a brief breakdown of each match.
The dual meet started at 174 where Coach Tom Brands sent out Sophomore Mike
Evans and Coach Kevin Jackson countered with freshman Tanner Weatherman. Evans
controlled the match from the opening whistle scoring four takedowns and
amassing over 3 minutes of riding time on his way to a 10-1 win.
At 184, the match between Ethen Lofthouse and Boez Beard also saw the Hawkeye
score takedowns in each period while grabbing nearly 2 minutes of ride time
along the way. Lofthouse fell one point short of the major decision winning
10-3.
At 197, Iowa State’s Kyven Gadson used some slick offense in the first period
grabbing a pair of takedowns and hung on to a 5-4 victory over Iowa’s Nathan
Burak.
At 285, Iowa’s Bobby Telford survived a tough bout with Iowa State’s Matt
Gibson. Telford held a slim 1-0 lead heading into the 3rd when Gibson used his
explosive hips to his advantage and got an early reversal in the period. After
been ridden for nearly a minute, Telford was able to come around for a reversal
of his own and rode out the Cyclone for a 3-2 win.
At 125, Matt McDonough controlled the bout from the start in a match that
produced four stalling calls against Iowa State’s Ryak Finch. McDonough won
going away 13-2.
Before the 10 minute intermission was over, both Iowa State’s John Meeks and
Iowa’s Tony Ramos were in the center of the mat ready for battle. However, there
would be no battle as Ramos took the Cyclone down early and often winning
handily 19-7. Coach Kevin Jackson would later suggest that Meeks did not have
his weight under proper control for the match.
At 141, Iowa’s Mark Ballweg finished a nice double leg in the 3rd period to grab
a 4-1 victory over Iowa State’s Luke Goettl. Ballweg controlled the match on the
mat amassing 2:59 of riding time.
At 149, Iowa’s Mike Kelly used six takedowns and a reversal to dominate Iowa
State’s backup Luke Swalla. After the dual meet, Coach Kevin Jackson announced
Max Mayfield has been cleared to wrestle and will be the Cyclone starter going
forward.
At 157, Derek St John scored seven takedowns while soundly defeating a very game
freshman Logan Molina. Molina was constantly looking to score throughout the
bout, but St John shut those attempts down and often was able to counter and
score himself. At 165, Iowa’s Nick Moore got the match’s only takedown in the
1st period and held onto a 3-2 victory over Mike Moreno. Moreno was on the
attack during the last 30 seconds of the bout, but could not get a 2nd stalling
call or the match winning takedown.
Final Score: Iowa 32 - - Iowa State 3 Takedowns: Iowa 35 - - Iowa State 3. There
were no nearfall points scored in the dual meet.
